We are a small
company based in rural Suffolk, England.
There were two inspirations for founding Presta.
Firstly, large trade houses and vanity presses.
If you've taken your manuscript to a trade publishing house
then the words, "I'm sorry, this doesn't fit in with
our publishing programme" or "This is too specialised/
too broad/ too long/ too short" (insert any number of
other combinations here!) will be very familiar to you. Large
houses publish a tiny fraction of the books they're offered,
so the chances of your book being one of them are, frankly,
not great
People get incredibly disheartened by this, and often lose
their faith in the quality of their own work. So they turn
to the scourge of the publishing world; the vanity press!
These presses will take thousands of pounds of your money
(only a fraction of which is needed for actual book production)
to produce and market your book. But they will produce thousands
of copies (although you might get 50 free), and then won't
do anything with them, they'll sit in their warehouse because
actually getting a book into the shops is so hard.
The other reason was the horror stories
of people who'd decided to self-publish. They had all had
terrible battles getting their books produced, battles with
printers, with typesetters, with designers and all sorts of
publishing 'professionals' that had left them drained and
weary, wondering if it was all worth it, and that was before
even trying to get their book into the shops!
We thought:
It doesn't have to be that way!
